What is a porter?

It is a person who is in charge of transporting cargo (luggage) from one camp/shelter to another. Just as in the Himalayas there are “sherpas”, in Patagonia there are “porters”. Within the different circuits in Torres del Paine, mules, donkeys, lamas or horses are not allowed, which in other destinations carry out the work of transporting cargo.

How does the porter service work?

Dry bags are provided in which you can store the luggage that you want the porter to carry, whose weight cannot exceed 15 kg. This load is taken by the porter at the moment the tourist leaves a camp/refuge. When you arrive at the next camp/shelter, the porter will be waiting with the load.

How many kilos does a porter carry?

Each porter will carry a maximum limit of 15 kg from the passenger load. In addition to carrying its personal equipment, camping gear and own food.

How does a porter carry the load?

Each porter has a large backpack, in which they put the dry bag with the passenger's load and their personal equipment, so you usually see them walking with a huge backpack on their back.

Can a porter carry a suitcase?

No. Unfortunately you cannot bring suitcases, bags or backpacks. Only luggage that fits in the provided dry bag, which is carried inside the porter's backpack.

What type of load can the porter carry?

Whatever can fit in the dry bag provided, such as a change of clothes, sandals, personal hygiene items, etc.
Outside the dry bag, you can load a tent, sleeping bag, mat. Always respecting the maximum limit of 15 kg.

What type of load CAN'T the porter carry?

We recommend not carrying electronic devices such as cameras, lenses, tablets, etc. Or any type of fragile and delicate cargo. This is because the load is very compacted in the backpack and can break down.
Suitcases, backpacks, boxes, glass, stones, or any type of cargo that is very bulky or difficult to carry in a backpack will not be carried.

A porter carries the load of only one person?

Not necessarily.
There may be 2 or more people who hire the service of a single porter. The important thing is that the load delivered to the porter does not exceed 15 kg in total.

How does a porter know the weight of the load?

The porter carries a scale, with which the dry bags and cargo in general are weighed every day to ensure that it does not exceed the maximum limit of 15 kg.

What does the cost of a porter include?

A dry bag for each tourist to put and be able to transport the load, the porter's fees, in addition to their costs to carry out on the circuit, such as transportation to and from the park, ferry ticket, camping sites, camping gear and all the personal meals (which is carried by the porter himself and is cooked in each camp/refuge).

How does it benefit me to hire a porter?

By reducing the weight given to the porter, the tourist can trek lighter, avoiding getting too tired and muscle pain each day, so they can better enjoy each trail and the beauty of the landscape. There is no need to suffer so much and face a challenge every day by having to carry the entire load from one place to another.

Does the porter trek together with whoever hires him?

No. The porter treks alone and at a fast and constant pace, generally without stopping until reaching the destination. He always leaves after the tourists and arrives before to the next shelter/campsite and waits for them there.

How can I hire the services of a porter?

Contact us, let us know the dates and the camps/refuges where you will be each night and we will respond with the logistics proposal for the circuit you are going to do.

About "WO Porters"

Local agency from Puerto Natales, dedicated to offer professional porter service in the W circuit and O circuit.

Torres del Paine National Park
Also in other destinations
We are two local friends from Puerto Natales, graduates in Tourism, with more than 15 years of experience working on the different trekking circuits in Torres del Paine as a guide and porter for various companies, knowing perfectly the trails, the logistics of a porter and what quality service means. As it is our main economic support, we take this work as our profession.
Every year we notice that many tourists are unaware of the existence of this service and comment that if they had known, they would have hired a porter. Other visitors did know but could not find direct contact, without having to go through an agency that sells them a complete program, being difficult to hire the service for those tourists who prefer to travel alone, without guides or without intermediary agencies... Until now!
In January 2024 we decided to create an agency dedicated to offer only the porter service for the different trekking circuits in Torres del Paine or other destinations, bringing together local porters, with experience and dedication. In order to be able to visualize our services and reach tourists easily and directly, we created social networks (@woporters) and this virtual platform.
We believe that the demand for porters will be greater each year, both from direct clients and through agencies, so our commitment is to generate a committed work team each year, with dedication and desire to carry out this work professionally. To achieve this, we will generate a course of porters before each season and thus maintain a standard in the quality of service.
